The most famous Irish myth of hounds:
Culann the blacksmith invites the King, Conchobar, to his home for a feast. Before leaving for the feast the king goes to the playing fields to watch the boys playing hurling. The performance by one boy Setana is so impressive the kings asks him to join him at the feast. The boy agrees to follow after he has finished his game of hurling. Conchobar forgets about the boy and Culann lets loose his ferocious hound to protect his house. When the young boy Setanta arrives, the huge hound attacks him, he kills it in self defence with his hurley. Culann is devastated by the loss of his great hound, so Setanta promises he will replace the dog until he can breed a replacement and he himself guards Culann's home. From then on Setanta became known as Culann's hound
