The Irish Celt looked to the earth, sky and sea to learn about his surroundings to gain knowledge to survive. Along with this fascination and almost worship of animal symbols the Celt revered nature itself in the form of nature itself in the form plants, animals or the elements. Through symbols the Irish Celts sought to communicate with the seen and unseen. We see this tie to nature not only to Celtic craft but also in later Irish art in the finest example of medieval manuscripts the Book of Kells. The Celt believed animals arose from the otherworld where elves and fairies also come from. Ring forts or faire forts are still common in many parts of Ireland today and considered very bad luck to interfere with or change in any way.
