The Brigid’s crosses are associated with Brigid of Kildare who is venerated as one of Ireland's patron saints. The crosses are traditionally made on the 1st of February, S.t Brigid's feast day, usually from rushes or less often straw. Many rituals are associated with the making of the cross and it is traditionally believed that a Brigid cross protects the home from fire and evil. it is hung in many Irish and Irish American kitchens for this purpose. St. Brigid is also known as Mary of the Gael. Though a Christian symbol now, it possibly derives from the Celtic sun wheel.

The Legend

Brigid was called to the bed side of a dyeing pagan chieftain. She sat beside him to watch over him in his final hours. While sitting by the dying man, Brigid picked some rushes from the floor and began to weave a cross. The sick man asked what she was making, so Brigid explained the story of Jesus to him. Before he died the chieftain became a Christian.

All of our house signs and plaques are produced using only Irish limestone mostly from Kilkenny, Roscommon, Galway or the Burren. All of our pieces are unique because of the millions of years they have taken to form. When looking at the stone you will be amazed to see the small sea creatures in fossil form whose shells formed the limestone over countless millions of years. Thanks to those tiny creatures, your house plaque holds a slice of time millions of years old making this house plaque unique and an interesting addition to your home or an interesting and unusual present for a loved one. All our limestone is supplied by God and nature and worked by man.
