Here in Ireland a popular legend is that the Celtic cross was introduced by Saint Patrick or maybe the lesser known Saint Declan when converting the pagan population though no examples from that early period have been found. It is said that Saint Patrick combined the symbol of Christianity, the cross with the sun cross to show the new Christian converts the importance of the cross by linking it with the life giving properties of the sun. Art historians now think this theory is most unlikely . Historians now think its origin is from crosses carrying a victor’s wreath around their intersection. Such a cross is found on the back of the Liudhard medalet from Canterbury England dated around 590 AD.

Our Celtic house plaque comes in different sizes and is made from Irish limestone quarried from Co. Kilkenny. Irish limestone is millions of years old and is known for its durability. Limestone is a sedimentary rock comprised of mineral calcite. The calcite in Irish limestone is most commonly marine organisms. Irish limestone usually has the fossilised shells of the organisms visibly embedded within the stone making this house plaque unique and an interesting addition to your home or an interesting and unusual present for a loved one. All our limestone is supplied by God and nature and worked by man.
