Here in Ireland a popular legend is that the Celtic cross was introduced by Saint Patrick or maybe the lesser known Saint Declan when converting the pagan population though no examples from that early period have been found. It is said that Saint Patrick combined the symbol of Christianity, the cross with the sun cross to show the new Christian converts the importance of the cross by linking it with the life giving properties of the sun. Art historians now think this theory is most unlikely. Historians now think its origin is from crosses carrying a victor’s wreath around their intersection. Such a cross is found on the back of the Liudhard medalet from Canterbury England dated around 590 AD.
